GE Zoneline Replacement PTAC Units

GE Zoneline is one of the most widely installed PTAC brands in hotels and apartment buildings, in Philadelphia and nationwide. Current Zoneline models slide into the same 42 x 16 wall sleeve GE has used since 1961, so you replace the chassis and keep the sleeve, the grille, and the outlet.

Who GE Zoneline suits

Zoneline fits you if your building already has 42 x 16 sleeves and you want a unit your maintenance staff knows. Most Zoneline replacements in the Philadelphia area fall into one of these groups:

  • Hotels and extended-stay properties replacing guest room units one at a time or by the floor, with the same model across the property.
  • Apartment and condo buildings where units fail at turnover and the property manager wants a direct swap.
  • Senior housing and assisted living where quiet operation and simple resident controls matter.
  • Contractors who need a current, widely stocked unit for a 42 x 16 replacement job.

If your existing unit is an older Zoneline, such as an AZ45 or AZ65, the current series is the direct successor. If your sleeve is not 42 x 16, Zoneline is the wrong fit. See Applied Comfort for legacy sizes.

Replaces
AZ45, AZ65, and earlier Zoneline units on the same sleeve

Three Zoneline series. Pick by heat type.

AZES: electric heat

Cooling plus electric resistance heat. The direct replacement for the AZ45. Heat output depends on the power connection kit, matched to a 15, 20, or 30 amp circuit. Choose AZES when the room needs cooling first and heat second, or when your circuits limit you.

AZHS: heat pump

The direct replacement for the AZ65. The heat pump carries the heating load down to about 25°F outdoors, then electric backup heat takes over. In a Philadelphia winter, the heat pump handles most fall and spring days at a lower operating cost than straight resistance heat.

AZVS: variable speed

GE's inverter PTAC. The compressor changes speed to match the room load, which keeps temperature steadier and the unit quieter. GE rates heat pump operation down to 0°F outdoors. WiFi is standard. Make-up air and corrosion protection are options.

Not sure which series you have now? The model number tells you. Here is where to find it.

Voltage and amperage

Match the new unit to the circuit you have. The plug shape tells you most of what you need.

  • 208/230V units use a NEMA 6 plug. A 6-15, 6-20, or 6-30 receptacle sets the maximum electric heat the unit draws.
  • 265V units use a NEMA 7 receptacle or a hardwire kit. Many hotels and high-rise apartment buildings run 265V to the rooms.
  • A unit ordered for a 30 amp circuit does not plug into a 20 amp receptacle. Order the power kit that matches your existing outlet, or plan for electrical work.
  • Many commercial buildings supply 208V, not 230V. Zoneline units are rated for both. Check the nameplate on the old unit, or have your electrician read the outlet.

Wall sleeve and grille compatibility

Zoneline chassis fit the GE 42 x 16 sleeve. Most other manufacturers' 42 x 16 sleeves accept a Zoneline chassis too. Some need a gasket kit, a sleeve adapter, or a different rear grille.

  • Measure the sleeve opening, not the old unit. Width, height, and depth in inches.
  • Note the depth. Shallow sleeves in older masonry walls sometimes need an extension.
  • Check the outdoor grille. A stamped GE grille or an architectural louver both work if the louver pattern matches the condenser airflow.
  • Look at the sleeve condition. A rusted sleeve bottom or a missing drain kit is cheaper to fix during the swap than after.

Send a photo of the sleeve label with your quote request. Air Distributors confirms fit before the order ships.

  1. The model number of the existing unit, from the nameplate behind the front cover
  2. Sleeve dimensions: width, height, depth
  3. Voltage and amperage: 208/230V or 265V, and the receptacle type
  4. Heat type you want: electric heat, heat pump, or variable speed
  5. Quantity, and whether you want everything at once or a phased delivery
